Information For Students
Every student has the chance to live the life of their dreams beyond high school. The possibilities are endless – earning a certificate from a technical school, pursuing higher education or entering a career. The choice belongs to each and every student.
The Career and College Initiative works with community members, families and schools to ensure that all Minneapolis Public School students have a chance to explore the multitude of opportunities that life offers.
Career and College Center coordinators, school counselors and community volunteers work with students to help them answer a series of questions using Naviance, an online career and college planning resource, to develop a customized My Life Plan. This plan guides students in grades 9–12 in transitioning from high school to further education and work.

Information for Parents
Greater student achievement is more easily obtained with parental involvement. The goal of AchieveMpls is to reach more families, and then provide appropriate resources designed to make them knowledgeable on how to become better engaged in their children’s college and career planning. We achieve this through:
1. Connecting with Parents Where They Gather: This space may be as simple as a local grocery store, restaurant, beauty shop or laundry mat. Held in these places, a series of Parent Focus Groups, a Parent College Information Fair and a Community Forum provide parents with insight pertaining to their children’s future. Check the events page often to learn mroe about these events.
2. Connecting with Parents One-on-One: We connect parents and families who have questions about planning for their children’s future with a Volunteer Parent Coach. Coaches have experience in navigating the complicated financial aid and college application processes, and will meet one-on-one with parents to help them be successful in supporting their student.
3. Connecting Parents to College Campuses: The Parent College Tour offers parents a chance to visit Minnesota private and state colleges and universities. Parents spend a day with AchieveMpls staff members traveling and touring designated campuses to learn more about the admissions process, the difference between private and state colleges, cost variations, scholarship offerings, credit requirements, and entrance requirements (including the ACT and SAT tests).
